Hypnosis - What Is It?

Arguments have raged for decades as to exactly what a hypnotic, or trance state is. Opinion is still divided. What we do know is that a hypnotic state is a natural state of relaxation and focussed attention, when the sub-conscious and conscious minds come together to focus on the same thing. It is not the same as sleep, although a person in hypnosis can look as if they are asleep, but it is different to a normal waking state. In this state we are more open to suggestion, and the practitioner can more easily access our subconscious.

Everyone goes into a hypnotic trance state naturally, in their normal lives - for instance, when we are fully involved in an exciting/moving/frightening movie or TV program.

The person going into a hypnotic state will find it relaxing and pleasant. They will almost certainly be aware of their surroundings, and will not do or feel anything against their will. If your only experience of hypnosis is watching a stage show, or TV - be assured, medical hypnosis is quite different. There is no swinging watch, staring eyes or anything else strange or mystical. At Two Cities Hypnotherapy you will either be sitting on a recliner, or lying on a therapy couch, in a dedicated consulting room like any other clinical environment.

Anyone can go into trance. No one need be afraid that they will not be 'able to go under', or that they 'won't be able to do it'. In fact, the client does not need to try and do anything. It is completely safe, and nothing surprising or frightening will happen during hypnosis. It is not anything connected to 'the paranormal', and no special belief is required. Above all - you will not lose control. Clients who have come for their first hypnotic session apprehensive about what will happen, invariably wonder what all the fuss was about!

However - hypnosis is a powerful medical tool, which, when combined with psychotherapy and CBT., can bring about dramatic and lasting healing of psychological conditions, and change long-ingrained habits. Hypnosis has been used in medicine for over a century. It can bring about improvements in psychological conditions much more quickly than traditional talking therapies and analysis, and does not depend on extensive 'raking up' of past hurts and traumas. As it is a powerful tool, it should only be used by fully qualified, insured professionals with proper clinical experience.

At Two Cities Hypnotherapy you can be assured that you will receive personal attention, tailored to your needs, in an appropriate clinical environment with a fully qualified, insured practitioner prepared to really listen to you. You will find hypnosis to be a relaxing, peaceful and healing experience.
