DEPRESSION

Depression is a serious and debilitating disease. Sufferers often withdraw into themselves, and are reluctant to ask for help: but it cannot be stressed too strongly that sufferers should seek help with depression. Often sufferers are not sure whether they are actually suffering from depression, and many suffer for many years, gradually coming to believe that their negativity and lack of motivation is somehow part of their personality.

However, depression is a treatable condition. Unfortunately, depression itself robs the sufferer of hope, leaving them feeling that there is no way out. I want to stress that there is always a way out, and even sufferers who have lived with their chronic depression for many years find that with hypnotherapy they can quickly change a lifetime's way of thinking.

There is a place for antidepressants in the treatment of depression, and no client attending Two Cities would ever be advised to stop any antidepressants that their doctor may have prescribed. But hypnotherapy, combined with CBT and NLP, as is practised at Two Cities, can enable the depressed client to turn around their lives for themselves. This means that the therapy can empower the client to find their own way out of depression, which greatly enhances the client's sense of independence and self-confidence - both of which are weakened by depression.

Depression affects sufferers in different ways, but there are certain common features. Lack of motivation is usually present, which means that you may not be able any longer to enjoy your favourite activities. Difficulty in making decisions is common. A feeling of generalized dread, emptiness or anxiety - especially on waking, is very common, as is disturbed sleep, or waking in the early hours. Many feel a sense of isolation, even from their partners or spouses, and a feeling of guilt. Often the sufferer will endlessly rake over past events, or worry about future events, becoming locked into 'worst case scenario' thinking. Work and personal life is affected, and very often sexual drive disappears. At its most severe, recurrent suicidal thoughts can plague sufferers.

Depression is difficult for carers and partners, especially if they have no personal experience of depression. Often carers feel helpless, at a loss as to what to do to help, sometimes feeling frustrated and even angry with the sufferer.

Two Cities Hypnotherapy has a good deal of experience in dealing with serious depression, and has helped many sufferers to get well. It must be stressed that depression is not just 'feeling down', feeling sad or at a 'dead end'. Genuine depression is a state that can affect anyone, whatever age, however 'good' their life appears to be. It is no respecter of rich or poor, old or young.

What sufferers must remember is that to suffer from depression is not a personal weakness. Depressives are often strong and capable people. No one should feel guilty or embarrassed about depression, it is a condition like any other. People suffering from depression are not 'going mad'.
