ANXIETY
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a state of chronic emotional arousal. It means that sufferers feel a generalized state of constant worry, stress or fear. It is unpleasant and debilitating, and often manifests in physical symptoms such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or headaches.
It originates in the unconscious primitive mind. This mind is responsible for the 'fight or flight' mechanism that was originally responsible for saving our lives in times of immediate danger. The sense of fear readies the body for flight (running away), and so it is a kind of 'emergency state' that our unconscious mind puts us into when it perceives we are in danger.
Unfortunately, this unconscious mind can 'get it wrong', and put us into this emergency state when we are not in immediate danger. The resulting state - anxiety - is extremely unpleasant and exhausting, and cannot be controlled by willpower alone.
The first thing that needs to be said is this: anxious people are not in any way weak or timid. They are not lacking in willpower or determination, and they are not 'going mad'. However, fear is fear, and it is extremely unpleasant to be anxious for 'no apparent reason'.
Hypnotherapy allows the therapist to access the unconscious mind responsible for anxiety to make changes. Anxiety is a condition that is most amenable to hypnotherapy, and sufferes often obtain relief very quickly.
Often anxiety can be co-existant with depression, and should be treated along with the depression. Sometimes anxiety co-exists with panic attacks, although not always. Panic attacks are acute episodes of extreme fear, as opposed to generalized chronic fear, which is called anxiety. Anxiety is also present in many mental health conditions: it is part of the phobic response, and also OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). But sufferers need to know that anxiety is treatable, in whatever form, and the vast majority of clients attending Two Cities suffer from anxiety in some form or another.
Anxiety is unpleasant, but no one need feel guilty or inadequate for suffering it. It attacks those in the highest offices of the land, and those in the humblest of jobs, rich, poor, urban dwelling or rural dwelling. Sometimes it can attack someone for no apparent reason, and sometimes it can render someone unable to do something he has happily done a thousand times before. The key is to get treatment. Anxiety left untreated is only likely to get worse.
For those unable to get to Bristol - hypnotherapy recordings are very useful for controlling anxiety. See my recordings on itunes (search under Russell Binns) or see my recordings & CDs page here.
